Over a thousand anglers come to Matapedia, Patapedia and Causapscal rivers cach year to enjoy the beautiful sites, the great fishing facilities and the peaceful atmosphere.
It's primordial that we protect our resources, the beautiful sites and insure that everybody has an equal chance to enjoy them in a spirit of sportsmanship and courtesy.
This is why we have prepared an ethical code to help us attain our goal.
Respecting private property
Always use trails posted with the CGRMP sings that lead to pools, if you cannot do otherwise, always ask for permission before entering private property.
How to approach the pool
Avoid making noise while approaching the pool, fish are cosily spooked. Do not wade out to deep into the pool because this tends to disturb the fish and they move to another place.
Changing flies
An angler must use the same fly for the entire rotation unless he has a salmon rise to the fly. Then he may change for another fly and finish the rotation.
Fishing by rotation
In order to give an equal chance to all people fishing the pool, the real sportsman must respect fishing by rotation. To practice the rotation you must do the following procedure:
- The beginning of the rotation starts at the upper end of the pool.
- Each angler does a couple of cast, and then moves downstream always maintaining a secure distance.
- Between himself and the preceding angler and the one following him.
- Generally, a 30 minutes period is sufficient to complete the rotation of the pool. (ex: Les Frouches, Heppell, Monick).
- When a salmon rise to the fly but does not take it an angler may stop to change flies and try three to five casts at the same area without losing his place in the rotation.
- After these additional cast, it the fish does not come the fly, he must continue downstream in the rotation.
- When a salmon takes the anglers fly, all other anglers must retrieve their lines from the water.
- When an angler must leave the rotation for a reason or another, he must return at the beginning of the pool.
Fishing rods
Ten and half (10.5) feet fishing rods are allowed on pools that can be fished from one side only, Hence, these rods may not be used in the following pools such as Les Fourches and Heppell were fishing is done from both sides.
Rules and ethics
The angler must respect all rules and regulations regarding fishing and the conservation of salmon, as well as the ethical code. Communication between anglers is an essential tool that all should use; this method increases the fishing quality and helps maintain the respect from others.
Respecting the environment
Everywhere you go along the Matapedia, Patapedia and Causapscal rivers, we ask you to respect the environment. Garbage cans are located at several areas. You must not cut bushes or trees along the shoreline nor moves rocks because these help to form and maintain the structure of the riverbank.
Move once you hooked a fish
Once you have hooked unto a fish, try to move to a calm area in the lower end of the pool when possible.
Fishing difficult pools
If the banks of the pools are to abrupt to allow for rotation, the anglers have fifteen minutes to fish the pool and then must leave the chance to someone else. (ex: La Pierre à Luc)
Fishing both shores of the pool
If a pool is being fished from both sides at the same time, (ex: The Forks) the anglers must respect the rotation on their side, all the while respecting the anglers on the other side.
Monopolizing a pool
Sector 1-3 of the Matapedia River being a non-limited access section, no angler has the right to monopolise a pool. Everybody has the right to an equal chance to practice salmon fishing.
Low water fishing
When fishing during low water conditions it's recommended to use light fishing tackle (ex: floating lines) to avoid the jigging of salmon.
Catch and release
We strongly suggest to anglers using the «catch and release» type licence that they limit the amount of fish released per day to two. This measure is applied in order to reduce the risk of injuring fish when releasing them.
All anglers that practice catch and release should proceed according to the technique approved by the Société de la faune et des parcs du Québec.
